What's Tested in an MOT

The MOT examines over 50 separate checks across key safety and emissions systems.

Brakes

Brake pads, discs, drums, lines, handbrake efficiency, and ABS system.

Lights

Headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights, and all other lamps.

Steering

Steering rack, column, joints, power steering, and suspension components.

Tyres

Tread depth (min 1.6mm), tyre condition, size compatibility, and TPMS.

Seatbelts

All seatbelts for security, operation, and condition. Airbag warning lights.

Emissions

Exhaust system, smoke emissions, catalytic converter, and DPF condition.

Bodywork

VIN plate, registration plates, body security, doors, and sharp edges.

Visibility

Windscreen condition, wipers, washers, mirrors, and view of the road.

Common MOT Failures

Knowing the most frequent failure points can help you prepare for your test.

Lights & Signals

30% of all failures

The single biggest cause. Check all lights work before your test: headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights, and number plate light.

Suspension

20% of all failures

Worn shock absorbers, broken springs, and worn joints. Listen for knocking sounds over bumps and check for uneven tyre wear.

Brakes

17% of all failures

Worn brake pads, corroded discs, and fluid leaks. Listen for grinding noises and check pad thickness through the wheel spokes.

Tyres

12% of all failures

Insufficient tread depth (under 1.6mm), cuts, and bulges. Use the 20p test to check tread depth before your MOT.

Visibility

10% of all failures

Worn wiper blades, empty washer bottle, and cracked windscreens. Top up washer fluid and replace split wiper blades.

Number Plates

6% of all failures

Faded, cracked, or dirty plates that are unreadable. Clean your plates before the test and replace if damaged.

Pre-MOT Checklist

Spend 10 minutes checking these items to avoid easily preventable failures.

Check All Lights

Every bulb should work: headlights (both beams), indicators, brake lights, fog light, reverse light, and number plate light.

Fill Washer Fluid

An empty washer bottle is an instant fail. Top up with screen wash before your test.

Check Wiper Blades

Look for splits, cracks, or hardened rubber. Wipers should clear the screen without smearing.

Check Tyre Tread

All tyres need at least 1.6mm tread. Use a 20p coin to check - if you can see the outer rim, they may be illegal.

Clean Number Plates

Mud or dirt can cause a fail. Plates must be readable from 20 metres away in daylight.

Test Seatbelts

Check all belts extend and retract smoothly, latch securely, and show no signs of fraying.
